Istikana adds Social Discovery
Over the last couple of years it is clear that people’s appetite for video entertainment has been shifting from watching scheduled television to high quality on demand video services. The power of the Internet makes it trivial for users to find exactly what they are looking for and to watch it on their time.
Last year, we launched Istikana to provide the best online experience for watching the best Arabic TV content ever created, legally and for free. This is evident by the many tens of thousands of hours of high quality premium content enjoyed on Istikana everyday. However, we are not limiting ourselves to replicating a TV experience. We have already made many social features, such as social recommendations, commenting, and sharing, core to the Istikana experience.
Today we are excited to announce that on Facebook you will start seeing new video posts and play buttons from Istikana in your news feeds, tickers and profiles. This integration with Facebook will help everyone to discover more free Arabic content than ever before, legally and for free.
Simply login to Istikana using your Facebook account, and the videos you watch will automatically get shared with your friends.
As we built this integration we take our users’ privacy seriously. We have provided controls to allow them to opt-out of the auto share functionality if they feel it is inappropriate.

Istikana signs with ART to provide films!!
Istikana.com (the MENA’s primary Arabic video streaming service) announced the signing of an agreement with ART (Arab Radio & Television) to provide the streaming service access to its comprehensive film library.
This agreement will greatly expand the content offering of the site and will add a new genre of Films to its existing genres that have included thousands of hours of cartoon series, Arabic drama series, dubbed series, documentaries, entertainment and religious programming.
Istikana co-founder, content manager Tareq Abu-Lughod stated that “This is a very important and strategic cooperation. ART owns one of the largest film libraries in the region and this partnership will provide our visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the most popular Arabic films legally, fully, in high quality and for free.”
Istikana co-founder, business development manager Samer Abdin added that “Istikana is becoming the hub for TV producers to monetize their content online. We have proven this over the past year and ART is an important addition for our aggressively growing content offering”
Launched in March 2011, Istikana.com is the Arab world’s first on-demand service that streams popular Arabic library video content online legally, in full and for free.

2012 - An exciting year so far :)
Hey Everyone,
So it’s been a while since we last updated our blog. We’ve been so busy doing many exciting things!! We thought it’s high time we gave an update on some of the stuff we’ve been working on.
So firstly on the technical front:
- In our quest to make Istikana as user-friendly as possible we’ve developed a deeper integration with Facebook (please login to Facebook on Istikana to benefit from these great features)
- We’ve added a Facebook recommendation app that shows you what your friends have watched on Istikana as well as showing you recommendations. This is now present on all the screens and will generate interesting shows for you to view :)
- Remember, the more you share the better this will become!!
- We’ve added a bar that is on the bottom of the playback page that allows you to skip to the next/previous episode
- We’ve have completely re-vamped our mobile site – making it super easy to find your favourite content and added the same sharing functions as the regular web (email, Facebook, Twitter, Netlog etc) - here are screen shots

We are steadily upgrading our picture quality. This is an ongoing project and will take some time to finish but the below shows are already high definition - You don’t have to do anything as Istikana already automatically detect your bandwidth speed and adjust the quality of the picture to suit you best – just sit back, relax and enjoy
On the content side we have been working hard to get you the content and recently we released Bab-El-Hara series 2 – in our opinion the best of the series (please visit here for the latest releases).

!مليون زائر خلال 135 يوماً
يسرّنا إعلامكم أنّ عدد زوار موقع إستكانة الإلكتروني منذ إطلاقة على قناة ( عرب نت ) في 22 مارس 2011 قد بلغ الـ 1000000 (المليون ) زائر .
إنه ليشرّفنا هذا الإنجاز المتواضع و إنّه لمن دواعي سرورنا أن نحظى بتقدير مشاهدينا الكرام لما نقدّمه لهم من برامج .
منذ إنطلاق موقع إستكانة الإلكتروني ، كان هدفنا ببساطة هو مساعدة المشاهدين على إيجاد أكثر البرامج العربيّة الكلاسيكيّة المرغوبة ، و الإستمتاع بها ، من خلال تقديم خدمات ترضي كلاً من المشاهدين و أصحاب البرامج و أصحاب الإعلانات . و قد كانت لدينا قناعة بأنّه إذا ما توفَرت المادّة المناسبة في المنبر المناسب ، فسيكون بمقدورنا طرح رؤية متميّزة .
و منذ ان وضعنا هذا الهدف نصب أعيننا ، فقد نجحنا بإنشاء قاعدة إعلامية راسخة حقّقت مايلي:
* منح المشاهدين متعة المشاهدة بتقنية عالية من خلال إستخدام الأجهزة المختلفة .
* إعطاء أصحاب البرامج الفرصة لنشر برامجهم الرائعة بشكل قانوني على الإنترت.
* تزويد أصحاب الإعلانات بمنبر إعلانيّ مُبتكر للتّواصل المباشر مع المشاهدين .
هذا الإنجاز يشجَعنا على المضي قدماً نحو تحقيق المزيد من التّقدّم و النّجاح ، و هو ماتثبته الزّيادة المستمرّة لعدد المشاهدين ، و إننا نعد مشاهدينا بأن يكون إرضاؤهم هو غايتنا ، و سنبلغ قصارى جهدنا من أجل تزويد مشاهدينا بأفضل مشاهدة على الإطلاق .
إنّ هذا النّجاح أثلج صدورنا ، و نودَّ أن نشكر كل من ساهم في تحقيق هذا الإنجاز الرّائع ، لا سيّما مشاهدينا الكرام الذين لولا متابعتهم المستمرة لما كان هذا النّجاح مُمكناَ .

1 Million visits to Istikana in 135 days
We are very pleased to announce that last week, Istikana achieved 1,000,000 visits since its launch at ArabNet 2011 (22nd March 2011).
We are honoured and humbled by this achievement, and are comforted by the fact that our viewers appreciate what we are doing.
We started Istikana with a simple mission: To help people find and enjoy on-demand premium classic Arabic TV content through a service that users, content owners and advertisers love. We believed that if we could get the right content on the right platform, then we could really build something special.
Since that objective was set we have achieved in building a strong multi-device platform that
- Gives our viewers a seamless, high quality viewing experience across all common devices
- Gives content owners an exciting opportunity to monetize their incredible content online
- Gives advertisers an innovative advertising platform to actively engage with viewers
This achievement greatly encourages us that we are on to a winning formula. We will always keep our viewers front and centre and will continue to try our utmost to give our viewers the best viewing experience possible.
We are delighted with this achievement and want to thank everyone involved in making this achievement happen, but most of all, we thank our viewers – without them, none of this would be possible.

Istikana TV signs one of the MENA’s largest content libraries
Istikana, the MENA’s first premium online video streaming service, has signed a large content deal with Al Anoud for Art Production and Distribution.
In addition to the hundreds of premium Arabic TV titles in Al Anoud’s catalogue, Al Anoud owns the rights of one of the largest libraries of the region, that of liquidated Jordan Production Company.
Their library contains some of the region’s most popular 80s Arabic shows. TV shows such as Syrian comedy show “Maraya”, Egyptian comedy series “Zankalouni”, Jordanian “Kaifa Wa Akhawatiha”, Pan Arab entertainment show Studio 84, 85, 86 and 87, and many more.
Under this agreement, full episodes of Al Anoud’s and Jordan Production Company’s extensive library of thousands of hours of various genres will start appearing on Istikana in July 2011.
Mr Akram Al Momani, General Manager of Al Anoud, announced that “this is a strategic partnership we have with Istikana. It will allow many to enjoy the best TV productions, especially those of the 80s – the Golden era of Arabic productions. It also represents an opportunity for us to introduce a new strategic distribution and monetization channel for our content library online.”
Tareq Abu-Lughod, Istikana co-founder commented that “We are very excited about this partnership. Much of Al Anoud and Jordan Production Company titles have never been seen since their TV airing in the 80s, and represent a significant piece of our region’s history and culture. We are very proud to be able to preserve and provide these shows for a new generation of online viewers.”
Merely a few months after Istikana’s launch in 2011, Istikana has signed over 15 content partnership agreements and now offers an impressive line-up of legal premium Arabic TV content, much of it made available for the first time online.
